SOPHIE DRIES X ATELIER PIERRE CULOT 2023
ROUX-MIROIR, FRANCE
SOPHIE DRIES
In collaboration with Atelier Pierre Culot, Sophie Dries has designed a bespoke collection of sculptural ceramic pieces. Born from her long-standing fascination with raw materials and architectural forms, the project explores the dialogue between artisanal stoneware and minimalist geometry, creating an organic interplay between tactile glazes, earthy textures, and pure lines.
The collection is organized around purist, architectural shapes generated through a systematic interplay of forms and finishes. Handcrafted one by one in Belgium, each piece combines five distinct forms designed by Dries with five iconic glazes developed by the atelier. The candleholders, vases, lamps, and totems were conceived as functional, sculptural objects designed to bring the heritage of brutalist ceramic art into daily domestic life.
Presented as a tribute to the legacy of Belgian master ceramist Pierre Culot, the collection expands on the historical dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Developed in close synergy with Joseph Culot and the atelier's artisans, the project transforms raw clay into a living medium, blurring the boundaries between functional stoneware, studio craft, and contemporary sculpture.
The series is organized as a harmonious vocabulary of ceramic typologies that explores volume, surface contrast, and architectural presence. Staged across varied spatial contexts, Sophie Dries’ featured ceramic works and elemental creations are placed in direct conversation with interior spaces, establishing a fluid sequence throughout contemporary living environments.
